Representing survivors of violence and abuse with clarity and care.
About

Kathryn Welsh, J.D.
I'm an Omaha-based attorney with close to a decade of experience representing survivors of domestic violence and abuse, first as a staff attorney at a domestic violence services organization, and most recently leading direct client services for the organization. I focus on protection orders, custody and divorce matters where abuse is part of the picture, and family court navigation for people who need real legal guidance without a full-service retainer. I want to be someone who explains what's happening, helps you understand your options, and stands beside you for the parts where having counsel actually matters.
What to expect
How it works
A few things you can expect: I'll be direct about what I think and honest about what I don't know. I'll explain things in plain language. And I'll tell you when you don't need a lawyer, because that matters too.
Limited scope representation means I can help with a specific part of your case without taking it over entirely: drafting documents, preparing for a hearing, or reviewing an agreement. It's a practical option if you want legal guidance without the cost of full representation.

FAQ
Common Questions
What is limited scope representation?
Limited scope, also known as unbundled legal services, means I help you with a specific part of your case rather than handling everything from start to finish. You stay in control of your matter while getting real legal guidance where you need it most.
What is a protection order?
A protection order is an order from a judge that limits contact between you and another person. In Nebraska, protection orders can address domestic abuse, sexual assault, and harassment. They are civil matters, separate from any criminal case, and you do not need a police report to apply for one.
Do I need an attorney for a protection order?
You are not required to have an attorney, but having one can make a difference, particularly if the other party has legal representation or if your situation is complex. I offer consultations to help you understand the process and your options before you decide on how to proceed.
What does a first conversation look like?
We'll talk through your situation, what you're hoping to accomplish, and what the realistic options are. There's no pressure and no commitment. My goal for that first conversation is to make sure you leave with a clearer picture than you came with.
Do you offer payment plans?
I work to keep my fees reasonable and accessible. Reach out, and we can talk through what works for your situation.
Initiative
Nebraska WithCounsel
A legal services initiative I co-founded to expand access to legal guidance for Nebraskans who would otherwise face the legal system alone. We're currently piloting an embedded legal services model in partnership with community organizations, with plans to grow as we pursue formal nonprofit status.
